Shame 2011

Shame is a movie I'm interested for so long. Therefore a rush of blood to my head, I went to theater by myself. It's good to watch it myself since It requires certain time to absorb and understand the message behind, so no one bother is better. Also the message it brings up is a little dark, being speechless with friends after the movie is kind of embarrassing and awkward.

In the movie, the protagonist, Brandon was a good looking man, also he was kind of successful in his career. Nothing about his company has been describe in the movie because Brandon is addicted to sex orgasms, sex is his world. After working everyday, he used million methods to find sex, porn, masturbation, finding hooker..etc. His cold eyes show he knows so well where to get sex.

Brandon got only his sister as his family member. Her sister was messed up with her life to the other men. She even has sex with his brother's boss (who has a family) in his apartment. Brandon could't stand it and just leave home. He knows this is certainly unacceptable. Alternatively, he has no difference with his sister because he has tried to do the same thing before.

Brandon doesn't know how to deal with the others, even her sister. At one time her sister unintentionally saw that he was masturbating in bathroom, he was so mad and decided to run out of the circle. He tried to get a normal relationship. However, the turn out is having sex again. He feels like he failed to get rid of sex. He would rather find a hooker so this causes no harm to the one who loves him. He doesn't know how to love people, he doesn't understand why people has to get marry because they will eventually feel bored to each other. He feels so frustrated.

At the end, he even pushed his sister away. He said to his sister that she is just a burden to him. This shows his world contain no one. However her sister points out that even though he has a job, his own apartment, successful career, wealth.. but he has no body. Besides her, he got no one. Her sister was so disappointed his brother gave her up, she committed suicide. Brandon realized that his point of view and attitude in his mind causing so much harm to the one who truly loves him. His pain was shown through his eyes. The director left an opening ending to the audience that if Brandon can change.

This movie has not much dialogue but the protagonist is successful to show all his thought and pain through his face. It is a challenging act. The message it brought up is also challenging to the audience because not all people can accept the darkness and ugly side of human nature. As I said I have observe certain amount of people leave the theater in the middle of the movie. I also heard some people comment the movie as "awful. However I'm still appreciated of watching it. When I left the theater, I just become speechless. As a man, how many of us run into the similar situation as Brandon? How many people treat the other as tool to fill up our physical needs?
